What Should I Expect?

The first step is to reach out and book your styled shoot by clicking the “book” button on this page, or contact us through email. Then we enter the following process.

Step 1 /// Intro call

Before you commit to a styled shoot, we want to make sure this is the best option for you. We want to hear about your branding goals and how you will be using the photos. Sometimes a Content Shoot or a Product Shoot might be a better fit for you and your business.

Step 2 /// Consultation after booking

After booking we would set up a 1 hour consultation where we can hear all about your vision and goals. We will discuss some ideas for location and what the shoot will look like. After this meeting we will have a solid understanding of what you are looking for and a few ideas to get us started.

Step 3 /// Planning

After our consultation, we will go to work on selecting the right location for the shoot, source the appropriate props and put out a model call if needed. We will work closely with you during this time to ensure you approve of final decisions.

Step 4 /// Photoshoot Day

A timeline for the day will be created and distributed to anyone involved and will allow time for set up and breaks as necessary.

Step 4 /// Post-Production

It usually takes us 2 - 3 weeks to deliver an image gallery. However, depending on the size and the length of the shoot this might need to be adjusted.

Once we have an understanding of the scope of the project we will confirm the turnaround time. We will deliver your images via Dropbox and all images will be provided in both web-ready and print-ready files.

Our editing includes light photoshopping to enhance the images based on our professional opinion as well as the removal of anything that takes away from the photo. Additional Photoshop requests may be subject to additional fees.

Learn about this service

  • A styled photoshoot is a carefully planned photography session where various elements such as theme, clothing, location, lighting, props, and poses are meticulously chosen and arranged to create a specific aesthetic or tell a particular story. These types of photoshoots are often used in fashion, editorial, and advertising photography, as well as for personal portraits or artistic projects. The key aspects of a styled photoshoot include:

Theme and Concept: The shoot is centered around a unique idea or theme. This could range from a specific era in history, a fantasy concept, a particular color scheme, or an abstract idea.

Wardrobe and Styling: Clothing and accessories are selected to match the theme. A stylist or the photographer themselves often curates these to ensure they align with the vision of the shoot.

Location: The choice of location is crucial and is selected to complement the theme. This could be an outdoor setting, a professional studio with backdrops, or a specially designed set.

Props and Set Design: Props are used to enhance the theme and add depth to the photos. In more elaborate shoots, set design can play a significant role in creating the right environment.

Lighting: Lighting is tailored to the mood of the shoot. It could be natural light, studio lights, or a combination, depending on the desired effect.

Photography and Direction: The photographer directs the shoot, choosing angles, compositions, and guiding models or subjects to capture the envisioned images.

Post-Production: After the shoot, photos are often edited for style consistency, color grading, and retouching to refine the final images.

Styled photoshoots are popular in creating portfolio pieces for models, designers, and photographers, and in producing content for magazines, social media, and advertising campaigns. They allow for creative expression and are a collaboration between various creative professionals like photographers, stylists, makeup artists, and models.

  • To set up a styled photoshoot, first define a clear theme or concept, then select a suitable location and gather appropriate props, wardrobe, and accessories that align with your theme. Collaborate with a team of stylists, makeup artists, and models if needed, and plan the lighting and composition to match the desired aesthetic. Finally, schedule the shoot, ensuring all elements and participants are coordinated for a smooth execution.

We LOVE helping with this part of the process, it doesn’t have to be hard work and if you are super nervous about planning a styled shoot we can help…it’s what we do!

  • Here are some creative ideas for a styled photoshoot:

Vintage Era: Recreate a specific time period, like the roaring 1920s, swinging 1960s, or the Victorian era, with period-appropriate costumes, props, and settings.

Fantasy and Fairy Tale: Create a magical, otherworldly scene inspired by fairy tales or fantasy literature, using elaborate costumes and dreamlike settings.

Seasonal Themes: Capture the essence of a season, like a winter wonderland with snow and cozy outfits, or a vibrant spring shoot with flowers and pastel colors.

Bohemian and Nature-Inspired: Use natural settings like forests or beaches, incorporating bohemian-style clothing and accessories, and elements like floral crowns.

Urban Street Style: Showcase contemporary fashion in an urban environment, using city streets, graffiti walls, and modern architecture as backdrops.

High Fashion and Avant-Garde: Experiment with bold, unconventional clothing, dramatic makeup, and unique poses against minimalist backgrounds for a high-fashion look.

Cinematic Inspiration: Base your shoot on a famous movie or genre, replicating its style, costumes, and atmosphere.

Travel and Culture: Highlight different cultures or famous travel destinations, using traditional clothing, props, and location-specific backdrops.

Retro Futurism: Blend retro styles with futuristic elements, creating a unique juxtaposition of past and future aesthetics.

Monochromatic Color Scheme: Choose a single color and create a shoot where all elements, from clothing to props and backgrounds, align with that color palette.

Each of these ideas can be tailored to fit your creative vision and resources, offering a wide range of possibilities for stunning and unique photoshoots. This is also the great thing about styled shoots is the creative juices can really start flowing.

Here are some of the other services and photoshoot types that we do

Portraits and Headshot

  • Portrait photos are a type of photography focused on capturing the likeness, personality, and even the mood of an individual or group of people. These photographs are typically taken with the subject's awareness and cooperation, and they often focus on the face, although the entire body and the background or context may also be included.

Styled shoots can also be shoot in portrait mode, or as portraits. Usually this means using a theme and fashion to create the styled shoot look. Few styled shoots will just be portrait but we can accommodate different types.

  • Here at SUBSTANCE, we wanted to create a headshot session where your mind doesn’t instantly go to the classic, cheesy headshots of days past.

Our goal is to transform the way people think of the word “headshot” or “corporate headshots” and instead of cringing, they get excited about the possibility of capturing their authentic selves.

This 30-minute session includes up to 2 wardrobe changes and multiple background options so that you have some variety in your images and to ensure that you have the perfect headshot for any occasion.

During the session, we want to capture your personality through different poses, high quality images and lifestyle-type pics.

If you’re thinking “Oh, but I’m so awkward in front of the camera” - not to worry, we will guide you through and make you feel as comfortable as possible!

Just because we are corporate photographers who do corporate headshots doesn’t mean we are boring, and we know you don’t want boring images.

Headshots generally need to be professional but that doesn’t have to mean boring. When you are planning your own styled shoots and you want headshots you can still incorporate fun elements and have a pro look.

Brand Photography

  • These images are used on your website, social media, and promotional materials to attract customers by highlighting the quality of your team, products, services, location and business.

Branding photos for your own business or for where you work is a great opportunity to be creative and plan a styled shoot.

  • These photos would be used to show case your businesses impact on the community or the environment while giving your audience and customers a look behind the scenes at who you are.

Team Photography

  • These types of photos are generally taken while your team is doing what it is that they do. These are typically best for your website or social media. They showcase your working environment and team dynamic.

Potential customers LOVE seeing who you are, and who your team is.

Live action styled shoots come in various shapes and sizes, but essentially we are capturing you doing what it is that you do. Some ideas would be real couples at a craft beer house, specific photos during a wedding day, or a rental company loading their gear. Each of these could showcase your company or products being using in the story.

  • These types of photos are great for showcasing your working environment for recruiting, or helping other businesses connect with your team.

When you think of a successful styled shoot you want your pictures to tell the story about your company, brand or product. Just like a wedding photographer that wants to showcase the wedding a styled shoot can do the same for you or your business. These photos can look great in a blog post, social media and on your wall.
